Treating wrinkles and general ageing factors generally involve non-surgical procedures which contribute to prevent deep lines from forming and temporarily block certain parts of the facial muscles from contracting. This is done by using a neurotoxin (toxins that are destructive to nerve tissue) which is injected to temporarily block the muscles in question from contracting, therefore smoothing current, and preventing further deep lines.
At Clinica Jóia we use the brand BOTOX® by Allergan. It is the first and only FDA-approved treatment to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines look better in adults. It also delivers predictable, subtle results, so you still look like yourself, only with less noticeable facial lines.

Typical Uses
When it comes to the effects of ageing, the most common areas clients want treated are:
- The smiling lines; better known as ‘Crow’s feet’
- Frowning lines
- Horizontal forehead lines
Botox® is used to reduce and prevent such problems. However, whilst it is often administered to address deep lines and wrinkles and other signs of ageing it can also be used to treat less commonly known problems such as jaw clenching, lifting a saggy neck and reducing a gummy smile.
For wrinkle treatment, doses of neurotoxin are injected strategically into these areas to stop the muscle from contracting, thus smoothing out the skin. Our expert doctor is also trained to inject this neurotoxin in the lower part of the face; the corners of the mouth, the upper lip (the moustache area), the jawline and also the neck area. Injection in these areas require a higher level of experience.

How It Works
1.During the consultation
During the consultation, you will be able to express what results you hope to achieve, allowing our doctor to create the best treatment plan for optimal outcome.
2.During the procedure
During the procedure itself, pain will be minimised by the use of ice packs, or topical anaesthetic which will be applied to numb the treatment area prior to injecting. The procedure will then begin. The finest needles are used to inject the substance into the muscle, and hence the treatment is practically painless.
3. After the treatment
After the treatment, you will be advised to work the muscles involved so that the drug localises better in the muscle.

Before the treatment can go ahead, there are some precautions to be aware of, which our clinic doctor will discuss with you in detail.
During the procedure itself, pain will be minimised by the use of ice packs, or topical anaesthetic which will be applied to numb the treatment area prior to injecting. The procedure will then begin. The finest needles are used to inject the substance into the muscle, and hence the treatment is practically painless.
The procedure inclusive of prep time will generally last for up to half an hour but this will depend on the extent of the area/s being treated.
After the treatment, you will be advised to work the muscles involved so that the drug localises better in the muscle.
To avoid lying down for 3 to 4 hours after the procedure, to avoid alcohol and exercise for 3 to 4 hours as the increased circulation will wash away some of the drug intended for the muscle and to avoid flying immediately after the procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
It is possible to experience side effects from treatments with Botox®, such as bruising or swelling at injection site, brief visual disturbances, drooping of eyebrow or upper eyelid, dry sensation in eyes, dry mouth and headaches. However, these are not permanent.
What often worries many clients when getting Botox® treatments, is the fear of looking too stiff or expressionless after the treatment, however a correctly performed treatment will still allow you to express all possible emotions and you have no need to worry about looking ‘frozen’ or ‘emotionless’. Remember that expressions are executed by using the whole facial muscles rather than just one or two muscles.
Wrinkle treatments can also be combined with other procedures at Clinica Jóia for a more wholistic approach, such as dermal fillers, since the use of dermal fillers may be help to fill out deeper lines still visible at rest and to create a more harmonious effect. Botox® to smooth neck lines is often also combined with thread or suture lifting to lift a saggy neck.
