Expression Lines Treatment

Treating wrinkles and the general effects of ageing does not always require surgical procedures. Expression lines treatment is a non-surgical, cosmetic treatment which uses an injectable neurotoxin to temporarily block the muscles in question from contracting.  This effectively smooths out any visible wrinkles, and prevents additional fine lines from developing.

At Clinica Jóia, we proudly use the brand BOTOX® by Allergan. It is the first and only FDA-approved treatment which effectively targets moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. Yet, the popularity of this treatment lies with the excellence of its results, which subtly enhance one’s natural look.

What It Entails

For expressions lines treatment, doses of neurotoxins are injected strategically into the effected areas to stop the muscles from contracting, thus smoothing out the skin. These types of injections require a high-level of expertise, which is why at Clinica Jóia this procedure is exclusively carried out by our expert doctor. Our specialist has been trained in the safest way to inject neurotoxins in the lower part of the face, including the corners of the mouth, the upper lip (the moustache area), the jawline and also the neck area.

How It Works

1.During the consultation

If you are interested in undergoing wrinkle treatment, you should start by booking a consultation with our clinic doctor. During the consultation, you will be able to express what you are hoping to gain from this treatment, allowing our doctor to create the best treatment plan for an optimal outcome.

Before the treatment is officially scheduled, the doctor will also use this time to discuss any relevant details related to this treatment, to ensure that you are aware of all the risks and benefits before moving forward.

2.During the procedure

During the treatment itself, pain will be minimised through the use of ice packs, or topical anaesthetic which will be applied to numb the treatment area prior to injecting. The procedure will then begin. The finest needles are used to inject the substance into the muscle and hence, the treatment is practically painless.

The overall procedure - inclusive of prep time - will generally last up to half an hour, but this will depend on the extent of the area/s being treated.

3.After the treatment

After the treatment, you will be advised to work the treated muscles to ensure that the drug localises better.

During the 3 to 4 hours after the procedure, you will also be asked to avoid lying down, refrain from consuming alcohol and exercising, as the increased circulation would wash away some of the injected substance intended for the muscle. Additionally, you will also need to avoid flying immediately after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any side effects?

The common side effects are injection site redness, bruising, and mild headache. These resolve within a matter of days.

What concerns do clients usually have?

When considering Botox® treatments, clients often express a fear of looking too stiff or expressionless after their treatment. Yet, when this treatment is performed correctly, patients will still be able to produce facial expressions and will not have a  ‘frozen’ or ‘emotionless’ look. Remember that expressions are executed by using the whole facial muscles rather than just one or two muscles.

Is there anything else I should be aware of?

For a more holistic approach, at Clinica Jóia expression lines treatments can also be combined with other procedures, such as dermal fillers, or suture lifts.

Follow-Up Procedures

The results of one treatment will usually last from 4 to 6 months. To keep your results at optimal levels, regular follow-up appointments will be needed.
